A Gillette razor on a couponer's budget? You'd pay less than the '50s.

 I stumbled upon this 50's commercial on Gillette razors today on The Coupon Project's Website. Back then, you could get one for the low price of... $1.29! Funny, but if you shop at Walgreens and Rite Aid, you should be able to beat that price easily enough.

How's that for reverse inflation?

Ten Tips for Saving Money on Printing Costs

Today I'm(Utah Deal Diva) going to share with you how to save money on printing costs. We all print amazing internet coupons, but if you've even just started printing coupons, you've probably realized just how short-lived those print cartridges are!

Here are a few tips on maximizing your ink usage and lowering your out-of-pocket costs for printing supplies.

  1. Buy your cartridges online. There are several online retailers, but my favorite is DataBazaar. They offer free shipping and my normally $14+ cartridges cost me $4. They're easy to use and last long- both bonuses!
  2. Refill your print cartridges at drug stores. I know Walgreens in my area has this service. I've heard it's substantially less than buying a new cartridge. However, I know they don't offer this service for a wide variety of printers, so call ahead first.
  3. If you have to buy them at a store, go to Staples. They have moderate prices, good selection and will also take your old cartridge and give you a $3 credit on your next cartridge purchase!
  4. Print in draft. I print my coupons in color. The reasoning is because there are often watermarks on coupons that simply don't print in black & white. Many online coupons are high value and I don't want to take any chances with my coupon not being accepted! You can select "draft quality" (also called "fast quality") in the Preferences options before printing.
  5. Watch your coupon print. Most often, the coupon prints on the top, with advertisements on the bottom. After the coupon prints, push the "Cancel Print" button. The rest of the sheet comes out and you haven't wasted your ink on those ads!
  6. Don't replace your cartridge until the ink is GONE. My printer gives me a warning for a long time before the ink runs out completely. During that time, my print quality still looks very good. If I replaced the cartridge when the warning came up, I'd waste quite a bit of usable ink! Wait for the ink to be completely out before replacing it. {Each printer is different- if yours is running out of ink and the prints start to look terrible, replace the cartridge!}
  7. Stop printing photos from your printer! Sure, it's nice to have them right then, but the quality really is much better when you use an online photo service such as Shutterfly for printing.
  8. Print on scrap paper. Old homework assignments, fliers- if it has a blank side, use it to print coupons!
  9. Print on both sides of a new sheet of paper. This tip only works for single prints of coupons! When you print several from places like coupons.com, don't try to print on the back side or you'll end up with a coupon on each side of the paper {and having to choose which one to use!}
  10. Take advantage of "Back to School" sales for buying paper. Right now, office retailers are having huge sales to get shoppers in for school supplies. Even if you don't have kids in school, pay attention to these sales and stock up now!
This is a great article from Utah Deal Diva! I actually learned something!

The Rebate lowdown

This article was written up by Utah Deal Diva. Enjoy!

"If you haven't already begun taking advantage of rebates, I highly recommend it! Rebates are available all the time for a wide variety of products. The rebates I like most are "try me FREE" ones. I've gotten several items "free" by using these rebates. I say "free" in quotes because it isn't quite free, it does cost me sales tax and a postage stamp, but for the products I'm getting, it's worth it!

Here are a few tips to being successful with rebates:
  1. Analyze if it's worth the cost of a stamp + sales tax. If the item is normally .99, a rebate makes very little sense as it will cost you over half that to just mail it in!
  2. Make sure the amount of the rebate really does cover the cost. If it doesn't, again, make sure it's worth it. For example, I recently found a rebate on a bottle of shampoo priced at $6.99. The rebate said, "Maximum rebate value not to exceed $6.49." Sales tax was .46, a stamp is now .44, and the amount not covered by the rebate was .50. I'm already up to$1.40! For a bottle of shampoo, I determined it just wasn't worth it!
  3. Use coupons! Rebates are given for the line item cost and don't account for coupons used. You might be able to recoup the cost of tax and postage stamp by using a coupon with a rebate item!
  4. Read the fine print and follow the instructions. Rebates almost always have a deadline for mailing. Make sure you follow all the rules!
  5. Pay for the rebate item separately. It's easier to just mail in the small receipt and not have to worry about not having a receipt for another purchase made in the same transaction.
  6. Process and mail all of your rebates fast! I usually keep all my rebate items (rebate form & receipt) in one location and fill everything out once a week. I also keep envelopes, stamps and anything else I'd need in the same location!
  7. Keep track of your rebates. Most rebates take anywhere from 4-10 weeks to process. Write down the terms and contact info and if you haven't heard from them by the indicated date, give them a call!
  8. Take the full item amount out of your budget when you bought it and don't add it back in until you receive the rebate. For instance, one week, I bought 2 items totalling $15.98. Both have full rebates, but for now, I'm going to deduct the $16 from my $35 weekly grocery budget. In several weeks, when I get my rebate checks, I'll just cash them and put the amount back in my grocery envelope. This way, you don't account for the rebate twice, acting like it's free when you buy it, then adding it in (again) when you get the check."

Power Shopping!

I'm sure many of you noticed the cool article on the front page of the newspaper this morning, Power Shopping. It was all about couponing and how much money it can save you. How neat is that?! Never mind the myriad of crises going on overseas, the NBA playoffs or anything else- let's put couponing on the front page! I might sound like I'm being sarcastic, and yeah, I am a little bit but I still think it's cool. Saving money has all of a sudden gotten very popular. Utah in particular is enamoured by the idea- 4% of shoppers in Utah use coupons, which puts us as one of the nation's leaders!

I encourage you to read the full article here. It goes over different methods of couponing, and, take away what you want, but I think the big message here is that it doesn't really matter how you do it, just using even a few coupons combined with a sale each month will save you a lot of money! Find your own method- try different things out and see what works best for you.

Best Price Lists

There are two great places to find what the "Buy" prices of frequently purchased items. You can keep your own list, use these that I've listed or do a combo method like I do. I have the list from Southern Savers printed out and with me in my binder, but I also have started my own list of price tracking on items I would like to try or am interested in knowing what the lowest price is. I don't keep track of every single item I buy, but just a few! Hope this helps you figure out the best steal of a deal price!!

Freezing Food: A Few Tips

A great article put together by Utah Deal Diva:

Every time I post a picture of my freezer contents, I get a flood of emails and comments asking about certain foods that can or cannot be frozen. So I thought I'd give a list of items that freeze well, as well as some tips on freezing food.

As a disclaimer, most anything can be frozen. However, the texture and consistency often change, so I've tried to be specific and list foods that I choose to freeze, or not to freeze.

Items I Freeze:
  • Milk: No need to open or empty out any, when frozen, the circles on the side pop out to allow for expansion! I normally allow for a full day in an empty sink for a gallon to defrost. We are avid milk drinkers and can't even taste a difference in the milk that has been frozen! I'll often buy 3-4 gallons and freeze two. We still use them all before the "Best Buy" date, but the frozen milk taste fresher than if we had just kept it in the fridge for 10 days.
  • Butter
  • Bread & rolls {I don't freeze homemade items often as they dry out too much. Sweet breads are the exception, as they freeze beautifully for a few months.}
  • Bread or pizza dough
  • Just about any meat, except meat in a can {once it's out of the can, it can be frozen though, if you want to!}
  • Grilled chicken: cook it just under done, then steam to reheat! We love being able to enjoy grilled chicken when it's snowing outside!
  • Most vegetables: Broccoli, green beans, peas, carrots, cauliflower, spinach, corn, whole tomatoes {Most vegetables must be blanched first.}
  • Most fruits: berries, apples, bananas, grapes {fruits will soften after defrosting, so I use them for baked goods or smoothies afterwards.}
  • Shredded cheese
  • Cottage cheese {to be used in cooking afterwards}
  • Celery & onions- cut up and used later on for soups
  • Grains: everything from flour to rice can be preserved longer by freezing
  • Sauces, including cream sauces, like homemade Alfredo. You'll just need to whisk them a bit when heating up and they're fantastic!
  • Cooked rice or pasta: Both defrost better if only cooked al dente.
  • Cookie dough, rolled into a ball
  • Baked cookies, cakes, pies
  • Nuts: I freeze or refrigerate all of my packaged nuts!
Items that I Do Not Freeze:
  • Block or sliced cheese {Cheese gets soft after freezing. Block cheese gets too hard to work with and sliced just crumbles.}
  • Yogurt {unless you just plan on adding it to recipes or smoothies}
  • Fruit or vegetables with a high water content, such as lettuce, melons, zucchini, cucumber,
  • Tub margarine: there's really no need to as it will be just fine in the fridge for months.
  • Eggs: you actually can't freeze eggs, but once again, they last several weeks in the fridge. Sometimes I age eggs on purpose for a couple weeks, then hard boil them, as they peel easier!
  • Cooked potatoes. I've tried several different varieties. They just change in texture too much for them to be palatable afterwards!
  • Homemade pancakes & waffles: They dry out so much I found we were drowning them in syrup & butter afterwards, so I stopped freezing them.
A few tips on freezing:
  • Analyze how quickly your family will use frozen items, then package accordingly. I own a food saver, but don't use it very often as the bags are expensive and we eat the food within such a short time that it's not worth it! For most meats, I first wrap them in the freezer Press 'N Seal wrap, then foil. Freezer paper also works well. For items we plan on using quickly, I just put them in a ziplock bag.
  • Freeze diced fruits and vegetables flat on a tray first, like this. Once they're frozen, they can then be placed in a large ziplock bag, where you can take out individual servings.
  • Foods should be slightly undercooked if they are to be reheated when thawed.
  • Plan on using frozen fruits & veggies within 3-6 months, and meat within a year.
